In late 2023, Kirk Johnson and I co-creative-directed the system-building portion of Snap Partner Summit. We were asked to develop the look and feel for the hour-long event based around the visual touchstone of an eclipse. Our grids and animations were to be presented on a massive 11k-wide screen in an aircraft hangar in Santa Monica, which presented some exciting design and animation challenges. We took inspiration from dome-like form of the screen to imply massive galactic shapes, and developed staggered grids to create an effective hierarchy within the screen's center-weighted structure and tapered edges.
For the pitch phase we worked with Haolin Feng to develop a bespoke AR Lens just to show off our creative technology chops. Perhaps that's what put us over the edge and won us the pitch! Who's to say?
The project was paused for several months after we delivered our design system, but it was later re-staffed and restarted with creative director Jason Cook at the helm. He and the team did an amazing job creating stunning visuals for the final event. You can take a look at their work here. Special shout out to art director Devin Matthews and animation leads Anton Thallner and Gavin Kosko for guiding the production process from start to finish.
